About Organic Fertilizers

Alfalfa Meal: N-P-K 5-1-2

Primarily a source of nitrogen. Also includes some important trace minerals and triconatol, a plant-growth hormone and growth promoter. A primary benefit - increasing organic matter.

Bat Guano: N-P-K 10-3-1

A fast acting source of soluble nutrients, high in nitrogen and a good phosphorus source. Also contains potassium, calcium, boron, and sulfur. Aids root growth, leaves, stops leaf roll, fights “heart rot” in root crops, prevents wilting, loss of color and premature blossom drop.

Bone Meal: N-P-K 1-12-0 LASTS 4-8 MONTHS

A good source of phosphorus and calcium. Promotes vigorous bulbs and root systems. Great for boosting flower production or feeding fruit trees.

Cottonseed Meal: N-P-K 6-1-1 LASTS 3-5 MONTHS

Pesticide-free, slow release nutrients for acid-tolerant plants. One of the best fertilizers for blueberries,
rhododendrons, and azaleas.

Note: Cotton is a heavily sprayed crop and cottonseed meal not specified pesticide-free will contain residues of whatever has been sprayed on it. VermiCulture NW uses pesticide-free cottonseed meal in mixes unless labeled otherwise.

Feather Meal: N-P-K 12-0-0 LASTS 6 MONTHS

Comprised of ground poultry feathers, which are an extraordinary source of nitrogen. Great for plants needing a steady long lasting supply of nitrogen. Excellent for crops requiring high amounts of nitrogen.

Gypsum

A mineral (calcium sulfate) used to moderate pH. Improves soil texture, breaking down clay soils and increasing coherency of loose friable soils. Stimulates growth of N-fixing bacteria in soil. Aids in potash availability.

Kelp Meal: N-P-K 1-0-8 LASTS 12 MONTHS

Although kelp extracts do contain small amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium their value is not as a fertilizer but as a growth stimulant. They contain potent concentrations of trace minerals, micronutrients, amino acids, and vitamins essential to plant growth. Most important, kelp contains many growth hormones, including cytodinins, auxins, and gibberellins, which stimulate cell division and larger root systems.

Soft Rock Phosphate: N-P-K- 0-33-0

Contains large amounts of calcium, and phosphorus in a natural colloidal form. Colloidal phosphates suspend in soils and water so that leaching is minimized. Most chemical phosphates leach downstream resulting in poor nutrient efficiency. Phosphate helps in photosynthesis, nitrogen transport and calcium increases yields. High levels of phosphorus can also deter weeds from growing. Also contains iron silica and about 14 other micronutrients. Phosphate is both immediately available and a long term source of phosphates. Soft rock phosphate should be applied before planting for maximum effect.

Sul-Po-Mag: N-P-K 0-0-22

Short for Sulfate of potash magnesia. Contains 11% Magnesium and 22% Sulfur. This is a long lasting source of Potassium and Magnesium. Magnesium is a macronutrient often in short supply in soils, but is necessary for cell division. This stuff makes roses produce new cans like crazy.

Here is Why You Should Use Gypsum in Gardening
Do you have clay or layer of hard subsoil problems in your garden? Then gypsum may be the answer to help loosen the soil structure. It is not considered a miracle substance and you will find that it doesn't work right away, but a 3 year program of applications should help improve the poor soil conditions. It is not expensive and is easy to spread where needed.  Read More...
